Japan was a popular destination in the 1980s due to promotions and former Prime Minsiter Dr, Mahathir Mohamad’s Look East policy. Then came the 1990s when Japan implemented strict visa regulations following numerous cases of tourist who overstayed. It put people off and outbound traffic to japan slowed to a trickle.
The 1997 economic recession had a silver lining as airlines offered Lee huge discounts due to the low demand.

“I had to think out of the box on how to get Malaysians to go to Japan with me. I had learned alot from my Japanese friends during my time in Japan. The co-operation of the Japanese left a deep impression on me. I have worked with many Japanese and this is one aspect of their culture that I believe is the basis for their success, explains Dato Desmond Lee-San JP.
The Japanese also like to engage you to share with them. For example, when you enter a supermarket, they’d ask you to sample their food before you buy. These impressions gave me ideas.
To me, travelling is an experience I am sharing. We cannot just sell a package to a customer. It makes a difference if you get them to participate and experience the local life.”

Lee decided to offer three types of vacations: standard tours, tailor-made packages, and in-depth tours which focus on single destinations or explore a single theme like Lee’s hugely popular sakura (cherry blossoms)tours.

“I personally leads the sakura tours every April to places where we can best enjoy the splendour of this beautiful season. And we do as the locals do; we buy lunch boxes and enjoy them under the cherry trees!”

We love to place our customers at ryokans, small family-owned Japanese inns, so that they can really experience local life.
For our winter trips to Hokkaido, you can go skiing and experience the snow on the slopes, or soak in an onsen, a natural hot spring.”

The Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO) has acknowledge that Apple is the leading Japan outbound tour operator, handling over 12,000 Malaysian travellers to the country annually. Some customers have booked Apple’s Hokkaido summer tours for five years in a row as their annual holiday.
Business dipped following the March 11 twin disasters; Apple had reimbursed over RM5mil worth of bookings for Japan. Recently, it was the first agency to resume offering Japan tours. Confidence in Japan is picking up, with some of the autumn tours being fully booked.

“Japan is like my second home. I have learned many things about life from my experience there. I have faith in the resilience of the Japanese.”
